| Although the WTO originally evolved its activities solely at its Headquarters, in 1990 it began considering the establishment of Regional Support Offices to reinforce liaison and cooperation with each member state. In 1992, the WTO decided to open its first Regional Support Office in Asia and the Pacific region, where tourism is developing most remarkably. |

| In response to this decision, at the 10th Joint Meeting of the WTO Commissions for South Asia, and for East Asia and the Pacific, held in Bali, Indonesia in October 1993, Indonesia, Japan and Sri Lanka announced their respective bids as locales for the new Regional Support Office. Of the three, Japan was selected through voting at the meeting. Officially, establishment of the Office in Japan was approved at the WTO General Assembly that followed the joint meeting. |

| The WTO Regional Support Office for Asia and the Pacific, opened in Osaka on 26th June 1995, plays an important role in promoting mutual understanding through tourism in Asia and the Pacific region, which is characterized by a diversity of cultures and traditions. As well, the Office is expected to contribute to the economic prosperity and political stability of the WTO member states. |
