Background of the UNWTO Regional Support Office for Asia and the Pacific
Originally, the World Tourism Organization operated only from its headquarters. Later, with the aim of reinforcing its framework of liaison and international cooperation, it decided to open its first regional support office in the Asia-Pacific region, where tourism was growing rapidly. Upon approval by the UNWTO General Assembly, the UNWTO Regional Support Office for Asia and the Pacific was established in Osaka, Japan, on June 26, 1995, as the second UN-related international organization established in the Kansai region (the 19th in Japan).

The UNWTO Regional Support Office for Asia and the Pacific has the vital role of promoting mutual understanding through international tourism exchange in the Asia-Pacific region, a region characterized by diverse cultures and histories. The Office also strives to contribute to the economic prosperity and political stability of member countries.
